NDIS guidelines & Modules

The NDIS scheme

In Australia, there are approximately 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. The National Disability Scheme (NDIS) scheme will provide more than $22 billion in funding to over 500,000 Australians who have a permanent disability. This scheme will provide many Australians the support they require for the first time.

The NDIS scheme is defined as:

  • National: The NDIS is being introduced across all states and territories.
  • Disability: The scheme will provide support to Australians who are eligible with physical, intellectual, cognitive, sensory and psychosocial disabilities. In addition, there are also early intervention supports which can be provided for both disabilities and children with developmental delay.
  • Insurance: This scheme provides all Australians the support and piece of mind. If an individual, child or loved one is born or acquires a permanent and significant disability, they will be provided the support they require.
  • Scheme: The NDIS is not a welfare system. It is a scheme designed to assist those people with disabilities and provide them with the appropriate support required in order to develop their skills and independence long term.

NDIS Providers

A service provider is an individual, business or organisation who delivers funded services. These providers have different areas of experience and expertise depending on the organisation. It’s important for eligible individuals or their carers to work out their needs and wants in order to find the best providers to fulfill all needs. Providers can come in the form of companies, charities, sole traders, not-for-profit organisations or other types of businesses. These providers who register with the NDIS are known as NDIS registered providers. All service providers are required to meet with strict government safety and quality requirements.

How NDIS Providers can help you

The NDIS provides funding to eligible Australians based on your individual needs. If you are eligible for NDIS there are various services that NDIS providers can arrange and carry out. For example, this can be in the form of housekeeping, cleaning, lawn mowing, gardening, meal preparation and respite for carers. There are various types of support that are funded by the NDIS scheme.

NDIS providers will cater to your needs using your NDIS funding. It is important to note that individuals who self-manage or have a plan manager to manage their plan are in a position to use both NDIS registered providers and non-registered providers.

What types of supports are funded?

The types of supports that the NDIS may fund for participants include:

  • Daily personal activities
  • Workplace help to allow a participant to successfully get or keep employment in the open or supported labour market
  • Transport to enable participation in community, social, economic and daily life activities
  • Help to a participant by skilled personnel in aids or equipment assessment, set up and training
  • Help with household tasks to allow the participant to maintain their home environment
  • Therapeutic supports including behaviour support
  • Home modification design and construction.
  • Mobility equipment.
  • Vehicle modifications.
